SURVIVING ARM PUMP
Despite the advancements in motocross over the years, "surviving arm pump" remains a common discussion topic in the pits. Below, I’ll share my insights on how to prevent arm pump during your ride.
Suspension Ensuring your suspension provides predictable feedback allows you to ride more relaxed, reducing tension in your hands, arms, and shoulders. This adjustment is often an immediate solution when I experience arm pump.
Comfort Riding comfortably and allowing the bike to move freely beneath you helps maintain a loose riding style.
Confidence Maintain confidence in your abilities on the track and ride slightly below your maximum speed to avoid gripping too tightly.
Fearlessness Riding without fear is crucial. Any fear, especially approaching jumps, can cause you to tense up, leading to arm pump
Stretching Stretching is essential. Lengthening the muscles in your hands, wrists, arms, shoulders, and back enables them to function correctly and prevents automatic tension. Longer, well-stretched muscles have better leverage and are more effective than shorter, tighter muscles.
Pre-Ride Cardio Engage in light cardio before riding to get your blood flowing and prepare your body for the initial laps. Activities like playing catch, light jogging, or jumping jacks can help.
Massage While waiting to hit the track, use your handlebar grips to massage your forearms. Focus on the muscle belly to free up nerves and veins.
Summary
These tips should help mitigate arm pump. While I’m not a doctor, these suggestions are based on personal experience and have worked for many riders I know. Despite the high costs of other solutions, these simple strategies have proven effective for me.
Due to an injury years ago, I can only ride a few times a year, which predisposes me to severe arm pump. Therefore, I adhere strictly to these tips to ensure a comfortable ride. If your riding schedule is similar, it’s crucial to emphasize these practices.
If you have regular access to practice, whether daily, every other day, or weekends, take full advantage of it. Consistent practice is ultimately the best way to avoid arm pump.
